In The Rooms – An Interview With People Laughing

Over the next couple of months we’re lucky enough to have People Laughing taking residency at Acoustic Rooms. Following on from their debut show at our place we took the time to get to know the mechanics behind one of Nottingham’s fastest rising bands.

Hey guys, we’re really looking forward to having you here again at Rescue Rooms! How did you find your debut supporting The Molotovs?

Hello! We are so excited to be performing at Rescue Rooms again. It feels like our second home at the moment. Our debut gig was so much fun, and it felt great to finally be playing the songs in front of a crowd. The Molotovs are a fantastic band and we can’t thank them and DHP enough for having our first show be so memorable.

You released your first single back in January and you’ve had a great reaction so far. How long has this project been in the pipeline and can we expect to hear any new music soon?

We only managed to form this band in September 2025, so the love we’ve been getting has been incredible for how long we’ve been together. I (Matt) have had a lot of music stored away in the vault over the years, so when I met Luke and Ollie everything fell into place really quickly. We actually have our second single, ‘Mano a Mano’, coming out towards the end of this month, which leans more into our heavier punk/rock side. We’re going to be releasing a lot of music this year.

With three dates coming up as an Acoustic Rooms featured artist, what can you tell us about your history with Rescue Rooms?

I played in a band called ‘The Shrives’ back in the 2010s and we played a lot of shows there, including a slot on Acoustic Rooms in 2018. Ollie and Luke have also played a lot at Rescue Rooms with various artists. I’ve had a lot of nights out there with people in the Nottingham music scene. It’s definitely lodged into our recent history as it’s the only place we’ve played so far, it’s always been one of our favourite Nottingham venues.

What goes into prepping for a live show? Any backstage rituals or tequila shots before you hit the stage?

Since we’ve not had many shows yet, we’ve not really had the chance to figure out any pre-show rituals. I would like to set a precedent where we all sing Barney the Dinosaur’s ‘I Love You’ before we go on though. Not sure if the other guys would be into it.

Nottingham is bursting with creativity at the moment, where do you guys look to for songwriting inspiration?

I tend to look inward at my own life, my relationships and experiences, and see what I can squeeze out of them. I want to build a world within our music and have all the songs relate to one another. My favourite thing about songwriting is when I can feel the authenticity in the words or the music, so I tend to take inspiration from honest songwriters, whatever genre really. I’d like people to listen to the songs and feel like they’re being transported into our little world.

Lastly, if you could choose any meal to have waiting in your dressing room post show, what would it be?

I think the boys would have a curry. I’d have a dirty burger and fries.
